Getting Kids to Read

My parents actually punished me by taking away my books. I was such an avid reader that I would read a new book cover to cover without stopping, staying up late into the night with a flashlight under the covers. How do we get our non-reading kids to be like that?

This is a great link to brain exercises for kids with or without ADHD. I am currently practicing the art of stillness/quietness/meditation with my students. Research shows that the brain can actually change by exercising it in concentration.

The goals of this meditation exercise are fourfold: increasing concentration, control, stress reduction, and creativity. Not only are kids today more stressed out, increasingly overwhelmed by overstimulation, but they seem to be losing their belief that they are naturally creative, innovative beings. This exercise encourages them to believe in their own creativity.
